Protecting a Glass Top Stove Made of Cast Iron

Cast iron is a popular choice for cooks due to its high heat capability, nonstick properties, and great taste. Glass top stoves are another favorite among cooks. They are sleek and easy to clean, and they distribute heat evenly.

These two favorite foods are difficult to combine.

Cast iron cookware that you can use with a glass top stove is recommended. Be careful when placing the cast iron on the stove because of its heavy weight.

You should be careful about using your cast-iron cookware with a glass top stove. Don’t worry. There’s no need to toss your castiron to keep your glass top, or vice versa. You can have both.

Two of my key recommendations are:

  • Use a protective sheet or parchment paper between your stove and your cast iron to avoid scratches
  • Carefully place the heavy, cast iron skillet on the stove

Let’s start with an appetizer that will explain why cast iron and glass top stoves are good companions.

Cast Iron on a Glass Top Stove: Why you shouldn’t

Cast iron is very heavy. Add to that the weight of cooking materials, particularly pots with soups or stews, and you have a lot of weight on your stovetop. Although it is not a problem to rest on the stovetop, it can be a problem when the pot needs to be moved, stirred, or even nudged.

Glass top stoves are able to withstand the weight of cast-iron sitting on an element. However, a quick drop or sudden jerk could cause serious damage. However, too much heat can cause cracks or scratches that could permanently damage your stove.

Cast iron cookware can slip if it isn’t careful enough to place on the glass stovetop. You might be able to get the cookware to slip and scratch by giving it a slight twist or flipping with a fork. It is possible to be unaware of the movement, and later discover discoloration or indentation.

Protective Cooking Pads Glass Top Stoves

Silicon mats or cooking pads can be used to cool counter surfaces. Cooking pads can be used during cooking. They can be used to soften the impact of heavy cast-iron cookware for glass top stoves.

A protective pad allows for more error. The cooking pad provides a thicker layer protection, even if your cast iron cookware falls or lands a little more rough than you intended.

Although we do not recommend that you drop from high places or hit as hard as possible, adding a pad to your kitchen can help you relax and allow you to enjoy the experience of cooking.

However, thicker layers can affect how cookware reacts to the food you eat. Although the heat distribution is consistent, it may take longer for your cookware to heat up. But, make sure to check the heat rating. It might melt if it is not checked.

Cooking pads can also be reused and washed easily.

Parchment paper (Induction Only).

A layer of parchment paper can be used to protect glass top stoves with uneven cast iron bottoms. Although it is thin, it cannot prevent drops from damaging your glass top stove, but it can help you avoid any problems related to sliding.

Cast iron cookware can be cleaned, including the base. This will reduce the chances of uneven surfaces. It’s best to keep the parchment paper between cast iron cookware to prevent buildup which could lead to an uneven surface.

Before you use parchment paper, make sure to inspect the bottom of your cookware. Your cookware will wear over time. The parchment paper might not be sufficient to prevent scratches if the underside becomes uneven.

Unfortunately, parchment paper can’t be reused, especially when there is high-temperature cooking or spillage. It can also be used for induction heating only. Other types of heating are dangerous. Even though the paper is coated, it can catch fire if touched by an exposed element.

Cast Iron Alternatives

This alternative cookware is better for glass top stoves.

Enameled Cast Iron is the best cast iron for glass top stoves

The finish of enamelled cast iron is smoother. Although it won’t make your pots lighter, drop damage will still be a concern. However, sliding won’t prove to be as dangerous.

Enameled cast iron is the best option if cast iron is required for your glass top stove.

Some coatings are not heat resistant. It can melt or fuse onto your glass top.

Enemy cast iron is more thermally efficient than cast iron, which is a significant difference in cooking. It will produce a similar result but take longer. You can’t season enameled cookingware to make a nonstick surface.

Enamel cast iron is, however, not particularly sticky if it’s used properly.

Enemy cast iron has the disadvantage of being among the most expensive cookware options. You get cookware that is high-quality, safe, durable, and attractive.

Carbon Steel

Carbon steel offers many of the same benefits as cast iron, but without the heavy weight. Although the material is the same, the finish is smoother and less likely to scratch. It can also be made nonstick by seasoned but you will need to do it again frequently.

Although it is more economical than stainless steel, it has a lower heat distribution and is less reliable. Although carbon steel can withstand higher temperatures, it needs to be maintained in good condition to avoid rusting.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is a popular choice for glass top stoves. It’s durable, dishwasher safe, heat-distributing, and even heat distribution. It reacts more strongly than cast iron to acidic foods.

The downside to stainless steel is its tendency to wear over time, which can lead to metals being leaked into your food. It is also difficult to clean as food tends to stick to it and can cause hint tint discoloration. Stainless steel is also the most expensive.

Other cookware

Aluminum coated with ceramic can be a great choice, as well as stainless steel, carbon steel, and stainless steel.

How to Fix a Scratched Glass Top Stove

A few home remedies can be used to fix a scratched glass stove top. These are temporary fixes for minor cracks or scratches.

Baking soda

To cover scratches on glass tops, you can mix baking soda with water.

Combine one tablespoon of water and two tablespoons baking soda.

Use a soft or a clean cloth to apply the paste.

Wipe off any paste residue from the stove’s surface.

Let it air dry.

Toothpaste

Baking soda is a common ingredient in toothpaste. This makes it similar to the one described above. You can apply toothpaste directly, rather than adding another ingredient.

Glass Repair Kit

Although not DIY, a glass repair kit is an do it yourself method that can prolong the life of your glass top stove. Follow the instructions on your kit. You will generally use a premade solution, although steps may vary.
